No Name restaurant opens.
1917
Originally intended to be called the Deluxe Diner, it is operated by Greek immigrant John Contos and begins as a fish stand on the New England Fish Pier. It receives its name when fishermen asks Contos, who never got around to putting a sign up, what the place is called, and he Contos replies “No name. Come eat.” After his death, the restaurant is run by his son, Yonnis, and officially assumes its name in the early 1960s. Reputed to be the oldest family-run restaurant in continued operation in Boston, it closes on December 29, 2019.
