Nix’s Mate is granted to John Gallop.
1636
The island is granted to Gallop “to enjoy to him and his heirs forever, if the iland bee so much.” It is subsequently named for the mate of pirate Captain Nix, who is hanged there, but not before predicting that the island will disappear to show his innocence. Used as a quarry for ship ballast and slate, the initial 12-acre island does subsequently disappear at high tide. A beacon is subsequently installed here that is today operated by the U.S. Coast Guard.
