News of the capture of French fortress of Louisburg reaches Boston.
July 3, 1745
The news prompts a celebration that includes a bonfire on Boston Common. The victory enables the New England colonies to continue to dominate trade with the West Indies and fishing on Georges Bank. A square on Beacon Hill is subsequently named to commemorate the victory. Gov. William Shirley receives a warm reception when he returns from Nova Scotia aboard the frigate Massachusetts in November (December-Kamensky).
