New Orange Line subway opens.

The line runs between Tufts/NE Medical Center to Forest Hills and is relocated from the elevated tracks along Washington Street to the former railbed of the New York/New Haven Railroad. According to Richard Heath, its cost of $743 million makes it the most expensive public works project in Massachusetts history up to this time.
