New Old South Church (second) is dedicated.
December 15, 1875
Architect: Cummings & Sears. Originally the Third Church in Boston (fourth) and known popularly as the New Old South Church, it is designed in the High Italian Gothic Revival style [Ruskinian Gothic style] and located at 645 Boylston Street. Built of Roxbury Puddingstone from the quarry on Parker Hill, the building’s exterior includes the likenesses of the architects in the figures carved into the piers that support the building’s porch. A 6,000+-pipe E.M. Skinner organ is installed in 1921. The Gordon Chapel is added in 1933. The tower, which begins to tilt almost as soon as it is built, is torn down to prevent its collapse and replaced by a smaller one in 1940. The interior is restored by Shepley Bulfinch Richardson Abbott in 1985.
