New England Life I is built.

1989

Architect: Philip Johnson. John Burgee Architects. Designed in the Neo-Classical Revival style, it is located at 500 Boylston Street. Boston Globe architecture critic Robert Campbell calls it “An example of architectural costume design [that] seems to made of papier-mâché.” Subsequently nicknamed the “Philco Radio building,” its unpopularity prompts opposition to a proposed a twin building next door at 222 Berkeley Street, which is redesigned by another architect before being built in 1991.* The Boylston Street building’s columns are removed in 2021.
