New England Conservatory of Music (first) is established.

Founded by Eben Tourjee, it is located initially in rented rooms at the Music Hall at 1 Hamilton Place. The oldest independent music school in the U.S., its first director is Tourjee. The school moves to the former St. James Hotel at 11 East Newton Street (second) in 1882, and to its current location (third) on Huntington Avenue in 1902.*
