National Maritime Day is again celebrated.

June 23, 1939

The event is attended by more 100,000 people gathered around Boston Harbor. Mayor Maurice Tobin tells the crowd, “We will continue to fight until Boston has an equal chance to compete.” Gov. Leverett Saltonstall declares, “We must fight shoulder to shoulder with the men who are making valiant efforts to make Boston Harbor the key to better times. New England must still turn its eyes toward the sea.”
