The U.S. beats the heavily-favored Soviet team 4-3 on a goal with ten minutes left in the seminal game of the Winer Olympics before a capacity crowd of some 10,000 people at the Lake Placid Field House. Former Boston University player Mike Eruzione of Winthrop scores the winning goal. The U.S. goes on to beat Finland 4-2 to win the Olympic gold medal on February 25, 1980. Other Boston-area players on the team are former Boston University players, Jack O’Callahan of Charlestown and Jim Craig and Dave Silk of Scituate. A movie based on the team’s victory is released in 2004.*
