Michael “King” Kelly is purchased by the Boston Braves.

The team (then known as the Beaneaters) pays the Chicago White Sox the unprecedented sum of $10,000 for Kelly, the 1886 National League batting champion. He goes on to steal 84 bases that season, which gives rise to the popular song and expression “Slide, Kelly, Slide!”
