Michael Capuano is elected to represent the Eighth Congressional District.

The mayor of Somerville, Capuano (D) defeats Philip Hyde III (R). Capuano, with 18,874 votes (23.2%) had defeated nine other candidates in the Democratic primary on September 15, 1998. The district, which at this time includes only East Boston and Brighton within Boston, is redrawn to include much more of the city in 2011. Capuano is reelected until 2018.*
