Memorial rally is held for Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.

April 8, 1968

Sponsored by the Black United Front and is advertised as being for African-Americans only, some 5,000 people attend the rally at Franklin Park. At the event, the BUF issues a list of demands which include: all white-owned businesses in the black community must close and their ownership be transferred to blacks, schools in the black community must employ only black principals, teachers, and custodians; and Boston’s white business community must pay $100 million in reparations to Boston’s black community. Later in the day, the Boston Branch NAACP issues its own list of 66 recommendations for policy changes that the group had already discussed with Gov. John Volpe and Mayor Kevin White.
