Melodeon Theatre opens.

December 26, 1839

It is located on the former site of the Lion Theatre at today’s 545 Washington Street. Although sometimes used for theater, it becomes the leading concert hall in Boston. Later called the New Melodeon, it closes in 1863, reopens as the Melodeon Billiard Hall from 1867 to 1878, then closes again and reopens as the Gaiety Theatre in 1878.*
