McLaughlin v. Boston School Committee decision changes the Boston Latin School admission policy.

August 22, 1996

U.S. District Court Judge W. Arthur Garrity finds that Julia McLaughlin, a white, eighth-grade student, was wrongly denied admission to the school as a result of its use of racial quotas – although it had been Garrity who had earlier ordered the school to set aside 35% of the seats in entering class for minorities in 1987. The school subsequently develops another methods to promote diversity, but it is rejected by the U.S. District Court of Appeals in 1998.*
