Mayor’s office receives increased power under the new city charter.

The mayor is given the power to appoint and supervise all city department heads except the police commissioner and the City Clerk, Clerk of Committees, and City Messenger, subject to confirmation by the Board of Aldermen, and to approve all contracts exceeding $2,000. The mayor is removed as a member of the Board of Aldermen and School Committee.
