Massachusetts Water Resources Authority Primary Treatment Plant begins operation.

It is located on Deer Island. The facility includes six towering “digester Eggs.” A secondary treatment plant opens in 1998. The Inter-Island Tunnel connecting South Shore sewers to Deer Island is built in 1998, and a new 9.5 mile-long outfall pipe is built in September 2000.
