Massachusetts votes to allow cities and towns except Boston to impose local zoning codes.
November 5, 1918
Voters approve an amendment to the state constitution that gives municipalities the “power to limit buildings according to their use or construction to specified districts.” State-wide, the question passes by a 2 to 1 margin. In Boston, the measure passes by a margin of 34,953 to 8,673. However, Boston is not given the authority to implement its own zoning code until 1924.*
