Massachusetts Turnpike opens.
May 6, 1957
[5/15-Rubin] The 123-mile highway runs from West Stockbridge to Weston. Construction began in January 1955. At the opening ceremony, turnpike chairman William Callahan declares, “[The turnpike] will not be completed until we take it into downtown Boston. It will be the salvation of Boston. My intention is to do everything within my power to bring this road into downtown Boston.” He does, when an extension is completed in 1965.*
