Massachusetts Turnpike Extension opens.
February 18, 1965
It runs from Weston to downtown Boston. Construction of the highway was authorized by the Massachusetts Legislature in 1955. Ground was broken on March 5, 1962, when Turnpike chairman William Callahan pressed down on a plunger to ignite demolition and said, “I only wish some of my critics and enemies were sitting on that ledge.” The highway is connected to the Ted Williams Tunnel and Logan Airport on January 17, 2003.
