Massachusetts Mental Health Center opens.

[6/24] Originally the Boston Psychopathic Hospital of the Boston State Hospital, it is located at 74 Fenwood Road. According to Dr. Vernon Briggs, it is created because “confused and mentally ill persons continued to be arrested on the streets of Boston . . .” Elmer Southard is the first director. The hospital includes an out-patient department for less acute cases, the first of its kind in the U.S. Renamed in May 1956, it relocates to the Lemuel Shattuck Hospital in 2003.
