Mason (Lowell) is born in Medfield.

January 8, 1792

The son of a musician and a musical prodigy, Lowell Mason comes to Boston in 1827 to serve as president of the Handel and Haydn Society. He lives at 21 Pinckney Street, becomes superintendent of music in the Boston public schools, introducing a music curriculum in 1838,* and goes on become the pioneer for teaching music in public schools and training of music teachers. Music historian Gilbert Chase later writes, “Of all musicians active in the United States during the nineteenth century, Lowell Mason . . . has left the strongest, the widest, and the most lasting impression on our musical culture.” Mason dies in Orange, New Jersey, on August 11, 1872.
