Mapparium opens.

1935

Architect: George Chipman. It is located in the Christian Science Library Building at 200 Massachusetts Avenue. The stained-glass, 30-foot-diameter globe is made up of 608 flat, colored glass panels. A clear, glass footbridge through its equator allows visitors a view from “inside” the earth, and its acoustics allow a visitor at one end of the bridge to hear whispers from someone on the other end. The names of the countries depicted are of the period and have not been changed since it was installed.
