Main Drainage System begins operation.

The combined sewer/storm drain system serves much of the city. It is the most modern municipal sewerage system of its time. Construction began in 1877 and is completed in 1885. They system uses the Calf Pasture Pumping Station to convey wastes under the Boston Harbor to Squantum, from there to a pumping station at Moon Island, and from there into Boston Harbor.
