Lowell (Ralph E.) is born in Brookline.
July 23, 1890
The son of John and Mary Lowell, Ralph Lowell grows up at 24 Commonwealth Avenue, graduates from Harvard College and serves in World War I. He works initially for Lee, Higginson & Company, becomes chairman of the Boston Safe Deposit & Trust Company, and goes on to serve on numerous boards throughout the city. Known as “Mr. Boston,” he is instrumental in the founding of the Lowell Institute Broadcasting Council and WGBH in 1953,* and the Boston Coordinating Committee in 1959.* Lowell dies on May 15, 1978.
