Loring-Greenough House is built.

1760

Designed in the Georgian style, it is built for British naval officer and “gentleman privateer” British Com. Joshua Loring and located at today’s 12 South Street. After Loring flees to Canada in August 1774, the building is used as headquarters for Gen. Nathaniel Greene during the Siege of Boston, then as the first military hospital in Boston in 1776. It is purchased by wealthy widow Anne Doane in 1779, who soon after marries David Greenough, and remains in the Greenough family until it is purchased by a developer in 1922. The house is saved from demolition when it is purchased by the Tuesday Club in 1924, subsequently preserved, and converted to a museum and place for meetings and events.
