Lewis Hayden urges Gov. John Andrew form an African-American Massachusetts regiment.

Hayden makes the request at a Thanksgiving dinner at his home, where Andrew is a guest. Andrew makes the request to Secretary of War Edwin Stanton at a subsequent meeting in Washington, D.C. It is approved and the regiment is formed in 1863.*
