Kenji Kimihara of Japan (2:17:11) and Roberta “Bobbi” Gibb (3:21:40) win the Boston Marathon.

April 19, 1966

The victory by Gibb, a Winchester native, is unofficial, since women are not allowed to run in the race. Gibb, a Winchester native and Tufts graduate, had her application to run turned down by race officials because she was female, but runs unofficially. The first woman to finish the Boston Marathon, she finishes ahead of 290 of the 415 male runners who began the run. She is also the unofficial woman’s winner in 1967,* and 1968.* The Boston Athletic Association finally allows women to officially run in the race in 1972,* and retroactively declares Gibb’s victories and winning times in 1996.
