Keayne (Robert) is born in Windsor, England.
1595
Robert Keayne arrives in Boston aboard the Defence in 1635, becomes a successful merchant, and lives near today’s 206 Washington Street. Although he becomes involved in business disputes in 1639,* and 1642,* Keayne contributes liberally to various town causes. He dies in his home on March 23, 1656, and is thought to be buried in King’s Chapel Burying Ground. In his will, a remarkable 158-page, 50,000-plus word document, he defends the conduct of his life and business practices, and bequeaths 300 pounds to the town for construction of a market place and town building constructed on the site of former home in 1657.*
