Josiah Quincy becomes president of Harvard College.

(Jan.) According to one observer, he rescues the school from financial chaos, student rebellion and a pretentious faculty. Quincy later maintains that to be a Harvard man is the most important measure of a man’s character. Pointing to the Harvard Triennial Catalogue, he declares, “That’s who he is.
