Jones Department Store opens.

Operated by George Kuritz on West Broadway, it begins as a five and dime store then becomes a clothing store when it moves to 671 East Broadway in 1947. Unable to compete with chain stores and the Internet, Kuritz’s son-in-law Jerry Hersch closes the store which South Boston residents call “Joneseez” on June 30, 2007.
