Jonathan Kozol is fired as a teacher at the Christopher Gibson School.

June 15, 1965

The substitute fourth grade teacher is fired for teaching of Langston Hughes’ poem “Ballad of the Landlord.” School Committee member Thomas Eisenstadt subsequently writes, “Mr. Kozol was advised and counseled . . . to restrict his reading and reference materials to the list of approved publications. These admonitions were brought about by Mr. Kozol’s continual deviation from the 4th grade course of study.” Kozol’s firing prompts protests by Gibson school parents.
