Joice Heth appears at the Boston Concert Hall.
September 15, 1835
A blind, African-American woman, she claims to be 161 years old and George Washington’s former nurse. Admission is 25 cents for adults, and 12 1/2 cents for children. Heth’s appearance is promoted by P.T. Barnum and the Boston Atlas declares that a “more indecent mode of raising money than by the exhibition of an old woman – black or white – we can hardly imagine.”
