Johnson (Edward C. “Ned” III) is born.

The son of Fidelity Investments founder Edward C. Johnson II, Ned Johnson grows up in Milton, graduates from Harvard College, and then goes to work for Fidelity in 1957. He lives for a time at 1 Charles River Square. Johnson succeeds his father as chief executive in 1972, and builds the company into one of the largest managers of retirement funds. According to business rival Bob Pozen, “He inherited a relatively small, regional asset manager and built it into a financial services giant.” Johnson becomes one of the richest men in the world and a major philanthropist, and retires and is succeeded by his daughter, Abigail, in 2014. Ned Johnson dies on March 23, 2022.
