John Silber’s gubernatorial campaign is derailed by television interview.
October 25, 1990
When news anchor Natalie Jacobson asks the Boston University president to describe his weaknesses, Silber angrily replies, “You find the weaknesses. I don’t have to go around telling you what’s wrong with me. The media have manufactured about 16,000 non-existing qualities that are offensive and attributed them all to me. Let them have their field day. You can pick any one of them.” The sharp exchange with the popular television anchor woman is subsequently seen as contributing to the Democratic candidate for governor losing the election a few days later.
