John Quincy Adams resigns from the U.S. Senate.

Adams resigns when the Massachusetts legislature, dominated by Federalists, votes to hold a special election for the seat six months early because many of the members are upset by Adams’ support for President Jefferson’s embargo. Adams returns to Quincy and subsequently joins the Democratic-Republican Party.
