John Quincy Adams is elected president of the United States.
February 9, 1825
Adams (D-R) is elected by the U.S. House of Representatives after finishing behind Andrew Jackson (D) in both the popular vote (153,544 to 108,740) on October 29, 1824 and in the electoral vote (99 to 84) on December 1, 1824, since no candidate received a majority. After Henry Clay withdraws his candidacy, Adams receives 13 votes, Jackson 7, and William Crawford 4, to be elected, prompting a celebration when the news reaches Boston. Josiah Quincy Jr. later calls Adams “Perhaps the best-trained chief executive officer this country that has ever possessed.”
