John L. Sullivan loses the heavyweight boxing championship in New Orleans, Louisiana.
September 7, 1892
Sullivan is knocked out by James J. Corbett in the 21st round in the first heavyweight title fight in which gloves are worn. Initially gracious in defeat, Sullivan declares, “Gentlemen, all I’ve got to say is, I stayed once too long. I met a young man. I’m glad the championship remains in America, with one of her own people.” Later, however, Sullivan is critical of Corbett.
