John Kerrigan is appointed acting mayor of Boston.

Kerrigan (D), the president of the City Council, assumes the office after Maurice Tobin resigns to become governor of Massachusetts. A resident of 213 West Eighth Street, his defeated in the mayoral election in November 1945,* but remains in office until the new mayor is inaugurated on January 7, 1946.* Kerrigan is subsequently reelected to 11 consecutive terms on the City Council, where he becomes known as “The silent man” because he rarely takes part in debates.
