John Hancock Mutual Life Insurance Building (third) is built.

1947

Architect: Cram & Ferguson. Officially the Berkeley Building and subsequently called the Old John Hancock Building, it is located at 200 Berkeley Street. The building includes a weather antenna first illuminated in 1950. The ditty to remember its lighting code goes, “Steady blue, clear view;/flashing blue, clouds are due;/steady red, rain ahead;/flashing red, snow instead.” In the summer, flashing red signifies that a Red Sox game at Fenway Park has been canceled. The John Hancock Company builds a new headquarters building nearby in 1976.*
