James “Whitey” Bulger “wins” the Massachusetts Lottery.
July 26, 1991
The reputed gangster and two cronies each claim 1/16th shares in the $14.3 million winning ticket sold at the South Boston Liquor Mart at 295 Old Colony Avenue. They are thus each entitled to an annual payment of $119,408. Michael Linskey, who reputedly actually purchased the ticket, is allowed to retain the remainder of the winnings. After Bulger becomes a fugitive in 1995,* a judge orders his $1.9 million in uncollected winnings to be forfeited to the federal government in 1996.
