James Michael Curley engages in a brawl on State Street.
October 4, 1926
Former and future mayor Curley knocks down Boston Telegraph editor Frederick Enwright at the corner of State Street and Devonshire Street near 29 State Street. Previously allies, the two men had fallen out and Enwright’s paper had become a constant critic of Curley. According to Enwright, the rift had to do with Curley’s behavior and stance on various issues. According to other sources, it was prompted by Curley’s failed to pay Enwright for his previous support or find other politicians who would. After the fight, each bring charges against the other. Enwright is found to be the aggressor. He is fined, sentenced to serve eight months in jail, and his paper subsequently goes out of business.
