James Freeman is installed as minister at King’s Chapel.
November 18, 1787
The ceremony is performed by the church’s senior warden, Charles Bulfinch. Clarke becomes the first Unitarian (then Arminian) minister and King’s Chapel the first Unitarian church in the U.S. Eight of the original nine churches in Boston soon become Unitarian, a term that is introduced in 1815.* Unitarianism comes to be known as the “Boston Religion,” and most of Congregational churches in and around Boston become Unitarian by 1820.
