J. Joseph Moakley is elected to represent the Ninth Congressional District.

November 7, 1972

Moakley (I), with 70,571 votes, defeats incumbent Louise Day Hicks (D), with 67,143, Melvin Miller (R), with 23,177, and a Socialist Workers Party candidate, with 2,397 votes. In Boston, Moakley loses to Hicks by a margin of 40,810 to 40,618. Moakley lives at 1812 Columbia Road. He is reelected until his death in 2001.*
