Independent Chronicle is first published.
April 25, 1776
Formerly the Essex Gazette, it is published by Edward Powars and Nathaniel Willis from a shop across from the Court House near today’s 25 Court Street. Thomas Adams becomes publisher in 1784. After the paper criticizes passage of the Alien and Sedition Acts, copies of it are burned in protest and Thomas Adams and his brother Abijah Adams are convicted of violating them and fined. The paper continues to publish until 1840.
