Hyde Park is annexed by Boston.
January 1, 1912
Approved by the Massachusetts legislature, it is the last major annexation to Boston and adds 2,869 acres to the city. According to James O’Connell, “[After the annexation of Hyde Park], No other suburb voted to merge with Boston, thereby enshrining the supremacy of home rule and fragmentation in the region. This ensured that the city of Boston would remain relatively small in area and in population.”
