House Committee on Un-American Activities is established in Washington, D.C.

May 26, 1938

Created by the U.S. House of Representatives and chaired by Martin Dies Jr. (R-Texas), its purpose is to investigate suspected Communists and Communist organizations. Later called the House Internal Security Committee, it is not formally dissolved until January 14, 1975.
