Hotel Pelham is built.
1857
Architect: Alfred Stone. [Arthur Gilman.] Designed in the French Second Empire style, it is located at the corner of Tremont Street and Boylston Street at today’s 195 Tremont Street. The first apartment house in the U.S. (or second, after one in New Orleans), it introduces the “French flat,” a kind of residential hotel, in which separate apartment suites on a single floor share a central kitchen in the basement. The building is moved in 1869.*
