Hooper (Samuel) House is built.

1861

Architect: Bryant & Gilman. Designed in the French Second Empire style and located at 25 – 27 Commonwealth Avenue. The house is built for the merchant and Congressman on two house lots and sold at below market price by the state commissioners in May 1860 before auctions on Back Bay land was mandated in order to induce similar “eligible parties” to buy in the new neighborhood. Subsequently owned by Thornton Lothrop, it is said to be the only house in the Back Bay with a side yard. It is renovated by Peabody & Stearns in 1871. The building is renovated by Rotch & Tilden in 1884, and split into two separate houses.
