Home Rule Amendment is adopted by voters.

November 8, 1966

Massachusetts voters approve a constitutional amendment designed to “grant and confirm to the people of every city and town the right of self-governance in local matters,” such as regulating elections, levying, assessing and collecting taxes, borrowing money, and disposing of park lands. Despite the wording of the referendum question, a law requiring legislative approval for municipal changes is passed in 1967.
