Historic New England is established.

Originally the Society for the Preservation of New England Antiquities, it is founded by William Sumner Appleton and located initially at 20 Beacon Street. The organization moves to its current location, the first Harrison Gray Otis house at 141 Cambridge Street in 1916. It was the first of more than 50 historic buildings that it has preserved and saved from demolition.
